How to Tip Pizza Delivery Drivers in the Mountains

Mountain pizza delivery is harder than city delivery. Here is a guide to tipping drivers who navigate gravel roads and mountain addresses.

Pizza delivery drivers in the North Georgia Mountains have a harder job than their city counterparts. They drive on poorly lit roads, find cabins with no visible address numbers, navigate gravel driveways that go on for a quarter mile, and do it all while dealing with spotty cell service that kills their GPS navigation.

The standard tip for mountain pizza delivery is 20 percent minimum. This might seem high compared to city standards, but consider what the driver is dealing with. A 20 percent tip on a $30 pizza order is $6 — reasonable compensation for a 20-minute round trip on mountain roads.

Tip more for difficult deliveries. If you are staying in a cabin at the end of a long gravel road, without visible address markings, tip extra. The driver spent extra time finding you. $10 or more on a standard order is appropriate for cabins that are hard to find.

Cash tips are preferred over credit card tips. Credit card tips go through the restaurant's payroll system and may take up to two weeks to reach the driver. Cash tips go directly to the driver that night. If you can tip in cash, the driver will appreciate it.

Consider the weather. Rain, fog, and winter weather make mountain delivery significantly harder. A $5 tip on a $25 order in clear weather should be $8-10 in rain or fog.
